Yoga for Weight Loss

1.Stimulate the vital force of the liver

Liver is an extremely powerful detoxifier and cleanser.  It purifies the blood, processes fat and cholestrol, both good and bad kinds.  If the liver is healthy and strong it can dispose the bad fats and add on the good fats.  It enhances energy levels by storing the glucose and making coenzyme Q10 that energizes the muscles.  By practicing certain yoga postures, the liver can be strengthened and can restore optimum lever function levels.

The best postures for the liver are mainly back bends:

  • Bhujangasana (cobra pose)
  • Dhanurasana (bow pose)
  • Chakrasana (wheel pose)
  • Matsyendrasana (spinal twist)

2. Activate the thyroid glands

The thyroid gland is triggered by pituitary glands of brain to make T3 & T4 hormones that regulates body’s metabolism.  An underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) can cause symptoms such as weight gain, tiredness, dry skin, constipation, a feeling of being too cold, or frequent menstrual periods.  An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can cause symptoms such as weight loss, rapid heart rate, nervousness, diarrhoea, a feeling of being too hot, or irregular menstrual periods.  There are certain powerful yoga postures that help to correct this dysfunction:

  • Sarvangasana (shoulder stand)
  • Matsyasana (fish pose)

 3. Create the right pH balance – Alkalize!

Metabolic acidosis happens when the chemical balance of acids and bases in the blood gets thrown off.  The body is then making too much acid (low pH) or it isn`t getting rid of enough acid or doesn`t have enough base to offset a normal amount of acid.   When any of these happen, chemical reactions and processes in the body don`t work right.  By including pH balance to health and healing through yoga and nutrition, body and mind rebuild on their own from all kinds of degenerative conditions that many allopathic medicines are unable to cure.  Addressing an over acidic system is fundamental to bringing the body back to vitality and is key to balancing all other systems.  Some of the best postures to increase alkalinity are:

  • Paschimottanasana (seated forward bend)
  • Janushirasana (head to knee pose)

 4. Balance of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system (SNS & PNS)

For working people, daily life brings in innumerable stress.   Long office hours, stressful computer work, small work cabins, stale AC air, dead-lines and busy schedules are the stress factors that activate the SNS.   Meetings and eating goes hand in-hand.  SNS provokes to junk eating.  The PNS and SNS work together to help to cope with and respond to daily life.     These stress factors activate the SNS.   The PNS and the SNS are connected like a seesaw; when one goes up, the other one comes down.  If SNS/PNS constantly jumps into action throughout the day, it tends to create an imbalance.  Effective stress management reduces the likelihood of stress eating.   Some Yoga postures activate the PNS and bring in the required balance with increased body awareness, specially relating to hunger and satiety with mindful eating.

The best yoga postures for this are:

  • Savasana (corpse pose)
  • Viparita Karani (legs up the wall)

5.Activate the internal heat in the nervous system

There are many people who think that going to a hot yoga class is the best way to lose weight.  That is far from the truth.  Ancient yogis never heated their caves or hermitage in the Himalayas to 40 degrees just so they could practice asanas in the morning.  They created warmth in the body through generating internal heat by creating nerve tension/length.  This is the best way.   This automatically makes the body feel warmer. This can be achieved by drawing the chin towards the chest through forward bends, thereby lengthening the femoral nerve and the spinal nerves.  This heat burns up and purifies visceral (deep) fat and subcutaneous (superficial) fat.

The best postures for this are:

  • Paschimottanasana (seated forward bend)
  • Anjaneyasana (lunge)

In both postures, the head must draw downward actively.

6. Move the body with strength

Any yoga position that requires you to be active, either as you shorten or lengthen the muscles, will help in weight loss.  This is because muscles are active tissue that consumes fat as fuel.  If you build strong muscles, they will be eating your fat stored even when you are resting.  That is why strength work is very good for weight loss.  Arm balancing postures are great for this.   Even basic arm balancing poses are great because they often engage every muscle, not just the arms or shoulders, but also the abdominal and leg muscles.  Some great postures for this are:

  • Bakasana (crane)
  • Pincha Mayurasana (feathered peacock)
  • Tolasana (scale pose)
  • Chaturanga (plank)

7. Get your heart rate up

Many people think that getting the heart rate up through jogging is a good way to lose weight.  Research shows that jogging leaves you exhausted quickly and lead to adrenal fatigue.  What is much better for weight loss is getting the heart rate up for a very short burst and then dropping it right down, then getting it up and then dropping it down.  This can certainly be achieved by an intelligent lesson plan during the yoga practice.

Starting in a standing position at the front of your mat, do two slow rounds of Surya Namaskar (sun salutation) and then come back to standing and connect with your heart with palms together and eyes closed for a moment. Then repeat it again, perhaps this time making the pace a little faster.  Continue a few rounds like this and you will have your heart rate at an optimum level; without tiring you than the jarring effects your body gets from jogging.

8.Cleansing the colon

Many people have food matter blocked up in their colon without the smooth bowel movement.  This makes them bloated.  Severe bloating can appear as obesity.  Eventually, if left untreated it can lead to a number health disorders.  There is a saying - ‘disease begins in the gut.’  There is certainly some truth in that. People who do not consume sufficient fiber in their diet struggle with a constipated colon.  Some kind of purging or Colon irrigation may be beneficial.

There are many yoga postures, mudras, and bandhas that cleanse the colon.  Many are for the advanced practitioners.  Some basic ones are:

  • Utks’epa Mudra (bellow’s pose) to be done first thing in the morning upon waking
  • Agnisara Mudra (fire pose)

Some advanced ones are:

  • Mayurasana (peacock pose)
  • Nauli kriya

All the suggested postures should only be practiced on an empty stomach.   Any postures with involving inversions should not be done because the putrefied blood will rush to the higher organs and it will disturb the mind.
